Ferrofluid from Shawn Knol on Vimeo.

Neato!  Check out these artists experimenting with ferro fluid.

A ferrofluid (portmanteau of the Latin word ferrum, meaning iron, and the word fluid) is a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field.

That last one by Shawn Knol is part of a collection of Cinemexperiments involving various bits of matter.

I’ve always had a fascination with light.  It is the reason we see color.  Through the camera oscura, light bends, distorting our reality, flipping what we see on toe.
Millennial Time Machine (Camera Oscura) @ U of B.C.
So there I was, new book in hand, glistening in shrink wrap.  Carefully slitting the sides of the flimsy plastique, I unveil this vibrant collection of luminosity.
Usually I begin at the end.  But I thumbed through pages until I reached the very last page before the credits and found this:
The reason why you should always begin at the end.

Breath-taking… Then, I recognized it.  Jeff Wall.

Then I read the caption.
“The lighting concept was referenced from a Jeff Wall portrait.”
Haha, of course it was!
That portrait is titled After ‘Invisible Man’ by Ralph Ellison, the Prologue. Ralph Ellison, fighting for black rights…black the absence of color, hardly the absence of soul or intelligence.  A reference to a reference to a… always a fun game.
Invisibility - the absence of image even with the presence of light.  Absolutely brilliant.
Jeff Wall once said,

the spontaneous is the most beautiful thing that can appear in a picture, but nothing in art appears less spontaneously than that

Which makes me think…how spontaneous can inspiration be, if the original thing is so powerful, so radiant, that its light penetrates even the darkest of crevices?
Spectrums of Inspiration.

Steve Edge has a marvelous amount of verve.  The son of a meat market worker and artists, he grew with a monkey “Primo,” who ate dinner with the family and started working in George Lucas’s art department at the age of 16, among other youthful accomplishments.  And just try to ignore his ostentatious and exquisite sense of style.  You’ll love him.

Until today, it was unclear who made these fantastical clips.  For the past half year, bloggers shuffled through hundreds of music artist profiles, straining to identify the mud masked voice.  My theory is that it’s a trebuchet for the ultimate album release.  Brilliant play, Jonna Lee.

And it all started with this 56 second video.

To absorb it all, watch them in order - in high def.  Each video introduces a set of esoteric symbols for interpreting the next.  So if you’re a delirious apocryphile, please start at the beginning.
